    James madison was elected to be the fourth president of the United States. He was a Democratic-Republican. He was known as one of the Fathers of the United States, he was elected because the citizens knew he was strongly supported going into war if necessary instead of doing nothing and staying neutral. James Madison was a strong leader that brought the American economy up despite the war.

    Pennsylvania failed to pay this tax until protest.This caused President George Washington to call up an army in the summer and fall of 1794 to suppress the insurrection. This was a citizen revolt against a 1791 tax on whiskey.

    It had all started when the French had been attacking American ships; this issue vexed president John Adams. Adams then sent Charles Pinckney, John Marshall, and Elbridge Gerry to negotiate with France’s foreign minister Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Perigord to leave American ships alone. Talleyrand’s representatives known as X,Y, and Z, came to them and demanded a bribe. This is where the term XYZ affair comes from.

    On February 17, 1801 Thomas Jefferson was elected the third president of the United States. He beat John Adams by a close margin and had been involved in many things left behind by John Adams. Jefferson won the support of congress against Burr and Burr got vice president.

    President John Adams was defeated to be the third president by Thomas Jefferson, in order to rival the Democratic-Republicans, he appointed chief justices that were all Federalists. James Madison was supposed to deliver the letters that said that the justice had been appointed as such. James Madison refused and did not deliver William Marbury’s letter and was therefore sued by him. The court ruled in Madison’s favor, the result of this court case was that th judicial review was set in stone.

    The original purpose was to confront Napoleon Bonaparte and buy New Orleans for up to 15 million dollars, but Napoleon proposed a counter offer. He offered to have America pay off all of its debts and the whole Louisiana territory for just 15 million dollars. It averaged to about 5 cents an acre.
  • Lewis and Clark Expedition

    Lewis and Clark Expedition
    This expedition was led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, they were commissioned by Thomas Jefferson to take notes and map the Louisiana territory. Along the way, they met Sacagawea, her son, and her husband. Sacagawea’s husband was the navigator and Sacagawea was a translator, and she talked to other tribes to say that they were on a peace mission. Lewis and Clark mapped all the tribes and land features on maps and wrote all the wildlife that lived there.
