    Underground Railroad Summary The Underground Railroad was the name of secret routes, underground passage ways, and safe houses used by slaves. People that were apart of the Abolitionist movement helped thousands of slaves escape from bondage. Even though helping slaves escape was illegal, there was about 100,000 slaves estimated to have escaped.

    Invention of Cotton Gin
    Cotton Gin and Eli WhitneyEli Whitney invented the cotton gin to speed up the process of removing cotton seeds from cotton. The gin did not make any money because of patent issues. Instead, the cotton gin just expanded slavery since the southern farmers needed the slaves to run the machine.

    Congress passes a bill that states Missouri may have statehood, under a slave state, but only if slavery is prohibited on the land from the Louisiana Purchase north of the 36th parallel forever.

    Nat Turner's Rebellion Nat Turner's Rebellion was a slave rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia led by Nat Turner. The rebel slaves killed around 50-60 people, which was the highest amount of people killed from a slave rebellion.

    Wilmot Proviso The Wilmot Proviso was a plan to get rid of slavery from the land gained from the Mexican War. Soon after the war began, president James Polk used 2 million dollars as part of the bill to negotiate the terms of the treaty(to prevent slavery in the land aquired from the mexican war). The main principle of the bill later helped form the Republican Party in 1854.

    Primary Documents in America The Comprimise of 1850 consisted of five bills that dealt with the issues of slavery. As a result, the Fugitive Slave Act was ammended, and the slave trade in Washington, D.C. was abolished. Also the act was passed leading to a boundary dispute between Texas and New Mexico. In which New Mexico created a territorial government.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was an Anti-slavery book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The book "helped lay the groundwork for the Civil War."

    The Kansas-Nebraska Act opened new lands(Kansas/Nebraska) which led to the repealing of the Comprimise of 1820. Allowing white male settlers to decide whether to have slavery or not through popular sovereignty.

    The United States Senate buliding was recessed for the day. So Preston Brooks, who was pro-slavery, walked into the building and ended up beating anti-slavery Senator Charles sumner unconsiously and left him to bleed to death. Even though he survived.

    Since Dred Scott attempted to sue for his freedom. A landmark decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that stated African Americans, enslaved or not, could not be American citizens. The statement was ruled unconstitutional, leading to African Americans full citizenship.

    The election of 1860 was turmoil. The democratics were divided by slavery into Northern and southern democrats. Soon the Republican party came into play, and got the majority of electoral votes. In which put Abraham Lincoln as president, and the southern democrats created the confederacy.

    Secession of Southern States
    The southern states that seceded consisted of South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tenessee. These states formed the Confederacy, which would be the start of the Civil war between the North and the South.
