    Smibert developed his art skills by doing small jobs that requires an artist such as plasterer ,carriage painter and a copyist,Then he acquired his art skills under Sir James Thornhill in his academy.Later in 1728 he came to America along with Berkley with intention of opening an art college.

    Benjamin West Left for Europe
    West was a pennsylvania born artist who drew painting of historical locations of the American Revolution.Smith and William Allen sponsored West to travel to Europe,with their help West went Italy and England where he learned about their famous artists and copied their work for references.

    Copely was a New England born artist.he was a selftaught artist.he was most famous for his portraits,.His portraits mostly consisted of portraits of middled class people.Later in his his life he attended Royal Academy of Art to be more educated about art

    Charles Wilson Peale opens Peale Museum
    Charles Wilson Peale opened the Peale Meusum in Philadelphia, which was the first American art museum.Peale studied art under Hesselius ,John Singleton Copely and Benjamin West.Then his curiosity brought him to Philadelphia and he practiced his art there .Later he got involved in american revolutionary war but never meanwhile kept practicing art.After the war ended , he deeply involedhimself in art and opened Peale Museum.
  • Charles Peale Organized Columbianum

    Charles Peale established Columbianum,first American art society where artists couls exibit their art.This was the first time in history american artists had a place to show their work in public.
  • American Academy of fine arts was founded

    In 1802 American Academy of Art was established in New York City to inspire and motivated younger genaration toward art.They practiced the classical art approach where the students were required to copy the great art works for learning better art work.
  • Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts were founded

    Pennsyvania Academy of Fine Arts is known as the oldest art school and museum in the nation.This school was establised by some famous artists including William Rush, Thomas Sully and Rembrandt Peale.This school was famous for their study of antique casts and drawing live models

    Sarah Peale had a first one person show in Peale Museum
    sarah Peale was born in an artistic family where both her meternal and paternal side of the familty was deeply involved in art.Her father wasn't statisfied with her arts.So, she took lesson from her cousin Rembrandt Peale.then later in 1818 display her full sized portrait in Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and 1820 had her one person show in Peale Museum
  • National Academy of Design was established

    National Academy of Design was founded by somes American artists such as Samuel F. B. Morse, Asher B. Durand, Thomas Cole, Martin E. Thompson and many more.The idea for this started when the artists in American Academy of Art felt neglected and formed an association called the drawing association but still this association was under American Fine Arts and was neglected.So the artists resolved and formed a new academy ,National Academy of Design
  • Hudson River School was formed

    Hudson River School was established originally by Thomas Doughty but several more artists like Thomas Cole,Asher Durand and Geworge Caleb were involved in this too.Their theme was natural landscapes.

    Apollo Association was founded by James Herring .he was a everyday businessman who was worried about artists who didn't hav a sepicific location for their art exhibit and auction.So,he formed Apollo Association.

    in the beginning apollo association was doing good business but then when Herring was having some financial trouble he was withdrawn from the association and it was renamed as American Art Union
  • Artists moved to west

    Artists moved to west
    It's was the era of the gold rush.When some gold was dicovered ibn California,everyone including the artists became greedy and started heading west with the hope that they will find some gold and improve their financial condition
  • Dusseldorf Gallery opens

    Dusseldoft Gallery started a different style of art exhibition .They displayed their art collections by type and school rather than the subject.It also promoted encouraged European and American genre paintings.

    it all started when a group of american decided that they needed a gallery of art ,so that american people can experience and learn about art.Then a lawyer proposed the idea for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and some businessmen,artists and leaders came together and incorporated the project.
  • Art Student League was formed

    Art Student League was formed
    this organization was formed when some students of National Academy of Design wanted more freedom and variety and broke away from the school.Later they went back to school but voted to keep the organization going and it grew larger and larger over time.

    During 1870s a group of artists in National Academy og Design felt that the academy didn't live up to their expectation and left .Later they formed a society called Society of American Artists.

    The Ten , Joseph DeCamp, Childe Hassam, Winslow Home ,J. Alden Weir, Edmund Charles Tarbell, Robert Reid, Willard Metcalf, Frank Weston Benson, , Edward Simmons. Abbott Handerson Thayer,John Henry Twachtman,Thomas Wilmer Dewing and broke away from Society of American Artists because they thought that society was too commercial
