Nov 1, 1845 US Tried to Buy Land(Sidel and Polk) Polk sends John Slidell to Mexico to try to buy New Mexico and California. But when he gets there, President Herrera refuses to meet with him because he is scared of being marked as a traitor. Mar 1, 1846 US Troops Stationed at Disputed Border General Zachary Taylor leds US forces south towards the land that America and Mexico both claimed as theirs. May 1, 1846 US Declares War Polk recieves Taylor's letter and asks the U.S. Congress to declare war on Mexico. Congress approves 10 million dollars and 50,000 volunteers for the ware effort. May 8, 1846 US victory; Palo Alto The battle is won and the Mexican army retreats past the rio grande. Sep 14, 1847 Mexico City Surrenders The Mexican President is stripped of command and resigns from his presidency, and run away to Jamaica. Feb 2, 1848 Treaty of Guadelupe Negotiators sign treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, and the treaty is then rushed to Whasington to be ratified by the US Senate. The treaty then becomes accepted by both the US and Mexico.
