    The battle for equal rights for African Americans has been going on for ever and is still going on today. 1960-1978 is the years I will be focusing on.
  • Sitting in the whites area

    Sitting in the whites area
    4 men sat in an area that blacks were not supposed to. This area was for white people. They were refused to be served and everyone was in disbelief that they would sit there even the workers who were also black. Even though they refused to be served they continued to come back and sit where they ¨were not allowed ¨ until they received service. This started a movement across the country of taking a stand
  • Boycotts

    In 1963 a series of boycotts, marches and sit-ins to protest the city's segregation laws. At first the marches only would be around 100 people and they would all be arrested afterwards.

    A bomb exploded in Birmingham church killing 4 young African American girls.

    March on Washington
    To build support of the civil rights movement, African American leaders organized a march on Washington D.C. More than 200,000 people gathered at the Lincoln Memorial.

    Martin Luther king gave his I have a Dream speech at the March on Washington. He spoke his vision of what The United States not only could be but should be.

    Civil RIghts Act
    President Kennedy was forced to take a stand after events in Birmingham. Kennedy asked Congress ¨to enact legislation giving all Americans the right to be served in facilities which are open to the public ¨.

    After months of fighting for the right to vote Congress finally passed the Voting Rights Act.
