Ivan IV's dynast came to an end in 1598. He was the first ruler to take the title of czar. He expanded Russian territories. He was known as Ivan the Terrible because of his ruthless deeds.

One of its most prominent members was Peter the Great. Peter the Great became czar in 1689. Like the other Romanov czars who preceded him, Peter was an absolutist monarch who claimed the divine right to rule.

In 1703 Peter began building St. Petersburg on the land he inquired. This was the capital of Russia until 1918.

The Romanov dynasty lasted until 1917. The capital was moved from St. Petersburg shortly after this.
