    Sand Creek Massacre
    The Sand Creek Massacre occured when a force of Colorado Territory militia destroyed a village of Cheyenne and Arapaho. The militia massacred 70-163 Native Americans. About 2/3 of them were women and children.
  • Medicine Lodge Treaty

    Medicine Lodge Treaty
    The Medicine Lodge Treaty was a general name given to three treaties between the U.S. and the Southern Plains Indians. The U.S. gave the Indian tribes each small reservations. As times went on, these reservations often diminished in size.
  • 2nd Treaty of Fort Laramie

    2nd Treaty of Fort Laramie
    The treaty was an agreement between the United States and the Lakota people. It guaranteed the people ownership of the Black Hills and hunting and land rights in South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana. This also caused a great deal of conflict between the Lakota and Ponca people, as the U.S. had granted ownership of some Ponca lands to the Lakota people.
  • Battle of Palo Duro Canyon

    Battle of Palo Duro Canyon
    The Comanche, Cheyenne, and Kiowa tribes had been living in the Palo Duro Canyon and getting supplies ready for the winter. The 4th U.S. Calvary got there soon, and wanted to trap the tribes there. They reached the Canyon in late September and planned a surprise attack on the Native Americans, which caused them to flee.

    Battle of the Little Bighorn
    A battle between three Native American groups and the 7th Calvary regiment of the U.S. Army. The three tribes involved were the Lakota, the Northern Cheyenne, and the Arapaho. The U.S. Army were defeated, and general George Custer lost his life in this battle

    Capture of Geronimo
    A group of Apaches, including Geronimo were sent as prisoners to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio TX. About six weeks later, the were sent to Fort Pickens in Florida and his family went to Fort Marion. They were reuintied in May of 1887.
  • Ghost Dance Movement

    Ghost Dance Movement
    The Ghost Dance was a Native American religious movement in 1890. According to Wovoka, the dance would bring the bufflo back and return peace to the Native people. This caused a lot of suspicion for the White Americans in the US, and they banned the religious practice.
  • Wounded Knee Massacre

    Wounded Knee Massacre
    The Lakota stopped near the Wounded Knee creek to make a camp and stay the night there. In the morning, the 7th Calvary surrounded the Lakota camp with the help of hotchkiss guns. They were hoping to simply disarm the Lakota people, however, one Lakota was reluctant to give up a rifle, and a shot was fired accidently, causing the 7th Calvary to open fire on the Lakota people. When it had ended, at least 150 Lakota men, women and children had been killed, and 51 wounded.

    The Nez Perce were a Native American tribe, who were forced in the 19th century to move, due to White American takeover. They were taken by a trail to an encampment in Idaho.
