In 1830, the Indian Removal Act was passed and gold was also found in Georgia. They tried to fight previous attempts at removal , but Federal troops began to round up the Cherokees in May of 1838. They were forced to march westward and many of the Indians became victims of disease, lack of food/water, and all around being ill-equiped for the march. The last of the Cherokee arrived in the west in March of 1839. Approximately 4,000 Indians died.

General John Tipton was put in charge of this Indian removal. It started when squatters settled on Potowatami land in Indiana. The squatters then asked the Governor for help with them gaining control of the land. This led to the ultimate decision of removing the Native Americans. The march to Osawatomie, Kansas, began on September 4. It ended on November 4.
