    John Adams was president and a Fedralist. He was running for a second term against Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was a Democrat- Republican. Jefferson and his running mate Aaron Burr tied in the electoral votes. Jefferson won the election and became president.

    Marbury petitioned the Supreme Court to force the secratary of State to deliver his commission. Madison denied the petition; he said it was unconstitutional. It was the first time that had happened. It established the judicial review, which plays a key role in checks and balances.

    The Unitied States bought Louisiana from France for 15 million dollars. The Louisisana purchase doubled the size of the country at that time.

    President Thomas Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark west to find the northwest passage. They reached the Pacific Ocean only to discover that a Northwest passage does not exsist.
