    The Gupta dynasty ruled india from about 320- 540 CE. Candra Gupta was the founder of this dynasty, and he ruled from 320- 330 CE. This dynasty flourished until the mid- 6th century, which marks the peak of classical Indian civilization.

    These amazing temples were built during the Hoysala dynasty from 1000- 1346 CE. This dynasty contributed much art, architecture, and culture to India. These temples show much detail, and the walls are carved with women displaying clutural dances, men in war, animals, and others of gods and goddesses.

    The British East India Company was authorized by Queen Elizabeth I to begin trading with Asia. However, the company came to rule large areas of India in 1757, controlling India's military and administrative functions. The rule lasted until 1858, following the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

    By the 19th century, Britain had control of almost all Indian lands. The British declared harsh, unjust laws, which caused many people to go into poverty. The discontent the majority of Indians encouraged many to join together and revolt against the British in large numbers, hence, the war of independence.

    When World War II broke out, the British congress decided it would give India the independece they had been fighting for if the country raised an army to fight in this war. India completed this task by raising an army of nearly 2.5 million men, and gained independence from the British government in February of 1947.

    India adopts a new constitution
    In 1949, India adopted a new constitution, and it became effective in 1950. India then became republic. The picture to the left shows a parade which is done every year on January 26 to mark this event. There is a parade on this day in almost every city, and this day has also become a national holiday in India.
