  • The Compromise of 1850

    The Compromise of 1850 helped the US grow because it added California and considered it a state. It also allowed for Utah and New Mexico to make their own decisions on whether to have slavery of not.
  • California Statehood

    California became a state in September of 1850
  • Uncle Toms Cabin

    The novel 'Uncle Toms Cabin' was published on June 5th in 1851
  • The Kansas/Nebraska Act

    This act stopped the Missouri Compromise. It allowed there to be popular sovereignty and also created 2 new territories. The "Bleeding Kansas" had began and caused pro slavery and anti slavery activists to go to the new territories in order to change the votes.
  • Republican Party

    The Republican Party wanted to end the Kansas/Nebraska act and to stop the expansion of slavery because they didnt agree with it.
  • Caning of Charles Sumner

    Charles Sumner was beat in the Senate Chamber and was attacked by Preston Brooks who was a pro-slavery Democrat who was from South Carolina. Brooks used his walking cane to attack Charles.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    The Dred Scott was a Supreme Court case in which the Court had said The US Constitution wasn't allowed to include American citizenship to Africans no matter if they were free or enslaved. Either way they could not have American citizenship.
  • House Divided Speech

    Lincoln gave warning to everyone in his A House Divided Speech by stating that if the US wanted to be a free country then they would have to act right away and stop being against each other before it was too late to change that.
  • The presidential election of 1860

    This election showed the division of the United States right before the Civil war had started.
