    The Persons case
    Is based on how the women faced alot of inequality. In 1916, there was the first female judge in the british empire. Many challenged her right to judge any cases because of her sex. After this, women groups asked the prime minister to appoint a women to the senate. It was again questioned by many if a women could be appointed. In 1927, 5 women decided to petition the prime minister, & in April 1928, It was decided women weren't persons. The felmale judge and the 5 others were not defeated.

    Foster Hewitt & hockey night in Canada
    In 1917, The national hockey team was first created and in 1925, the first American team joined the league.
    If you were in the league you would be playing during Hockey night in Canada. Hockey night in Canada is brodcasted over the radio with Foster Hewitt giving his amazing play by plays. In 1939 there were only 2 Canadain teams in the NHL- Toronto and Montreal. Hockey became very very popular.
    Foster Hewitt, was a Canadian radio brodcaster, who was most famous for his play by plays for HNIC.
  • Prohibition

    Prohibition
    In 1918 the federal government introduced prohibition, banning the production, inport, & transport of alcohol across the country. Canadian bought bootleg booze, which was made & sold by organized bootleggers & small time operators. There was a private club, where you would need to get approved to come in, & they had drinks. The United States, was officially dry, from the years of 1919-1933. Some Canadians smuggled liquor south of the boarder, Prhibitation dropped crime rate & arrests decresed.

    Spanish Flu
    The spanish flu and an influenza Epidemic. As Soldiers returned home from the war over seas, they carried the virus over. People got weaker from this virus, they often got pneumonia. Back then they didn't have penicillin & sulpha drugs, so many people died from pneumonia. The Thretres, schools & churches closed there doors, to try and stop the spread of the virus, some towns tried to set up a total quarantine. The health centers were insanly busy, with the number of sick & dying, 50000 died.

  • One Big union

    One Big union
    In 1917, A small group of radicals in Russia called Belsheviks over threw the government in a violent revolution. Some Canadians were influenced by this. The other Canadians were alarmed &. In 1919, when they Unionists met in Calgary. Well in Calgary labour leaders decided that to improve conditions, workers had to join together to create one general union. The unionists resolved issues to establish One Big Union, which united skilled and unskilled workers.
  • The Winnipeg General Strike

    The Winnipeg General Strike
    Building and metal trades council went on strike. They asked for 3 things.
    1. Decent wages
    2. an 8 hour day
    3. the right to bargain collectiviely for better working conditions
    They asked for support from other workers and by May 15, 30,000 other workers, walked away from their job. The strike invovled many industries, & Winnipeg was divided into 2 sides, the strikers & the owners. The strike lasted 37 days, & on June 21, it got violent. & 5 days later, everyone was ordered back to work.

    League of Indians
    In 1919, Fredrick Loft, a mohawk vetern from WWI, organized the league of Indians. This league was a first attempt at a united voice for aboriginal nations. Afther the war, the government wanted to aboriginals to be citizins. The veterans would then have the right to vote, if they gave up the aboriginal status.

    In the beginning of the twentieth Century.
    Americans introduced the branch plant system. These industries were copies of the american parent company. The product was the same, but the products were marked, 'Made in Canada' instead. This caused USA have to pay less for imports at the border.
    Different people believed the foregin capital was essential to devolp industries and to provide jobs (in Canada).

    The Group of seven was founded in 1920, its a group of artists. The tend to create art in which deal with Canadian experiences. The inspiration from the canadian landscape.
    The men were inspired by artwork from other artists, and just Canada in general. Lawren Jarris, Franklin Carmichael, Frank Johnston, Arthur Lismer, Fred Varley, A.Y. Jackson and A.J Casson were the members of the group of 7.
  • Insulin

    Insulin
    Over 1 million people had diabetes & no one knew what caused this disease or how to treat it. In 1922, University of Toronto, Canadian medical researchers discovered a treatment; Insulin!
    Frederick Banting was given the credit of this discovery. Frederick Banting shared his money earned ($40 000) for this discovery with Best & J.R.R Macleod shared his money with J.B Collip. And because of these 4 men, they have saved Millions of lives, & will always remain in Canadian History.

    Royal Canadian Air Forces
    RCAF was created in 1924, The government believed military forces, would be useful for peaceful purposes as well. Early pilots also conducted surveys, patrolled for forest fires,watching for smuggling along Canada's coast & checked on fishing boats. in 1927, the post offices started to hire pilots to fly mail into remote communities in Canada. The Famous Canadian war ace started his own airline in Edmonton after the war. He did plane stunts at fairs & made many plane trips for Canada.

    Black tuesday, was the day the stock market crashed. This was one of the most dramatic events signalling the depression. Many People played the stock markets, many dreamed of becoming rich, and how would they do so? They should buy plenty of stocks when the price is low and sell those stocks when the prices get high. It wasnt ask easy as it looks. And when the crash hit, they lost Everything!
  • 5 cent speech

    5 cent speech
    In the 1930s, the words "5 cent piece - speech" haunts King. These haunt him because the voters never forget those words, because King, said that if you were unemployeed he wouldnt give you anything, not even a nickel. So now the voters of the election don't forget that.

    Canadian Brodcasting Corporation
    CBC used to CRBC (canadian radio brodcasting commission). But im 1939 it changed to CBC. CBC proved that it could be a powerful force of establishing a sense of national unity in Canada. Now and days CBC is a main News channel, with news every day.
  • On-to-Ottawa trek

    On-to-Ottawa trek
    Thousands of men were tired of life in the British Columbia realief camps hopped on trains headed to Ottawa to protest the Government. As these men headed eastwards, more men joined them. The men wanted minimum wages and genuine system of social and unemployment insurence. The men got to Regina when they were stopped by the police, the prime minister claims that the trekkers were disobeying the law and were part of a plot to overthrow the government. After this, a riot began, dozens injured.
