    homestead is when farmers in the plains earn ownership of land by settling on it. Single women and wdiows used the Homestead Act to get property. Homesteaders were swayed by different companies to come to the plains to get land and be independence.
  • Fetterman Massacre

    Fetterman Massacre
    The incident known as the Fetterman Massacre was the bloodiest incident that occured while army troops were manning a fort on the Bonzeman Trail. A Soux millitary leader tricked the fort's commander into sending about 80 soldiers into pursuit. The detachment of 80 soldiers were ambushed.
  • Treaty of Fort Laramie

    Treaty of Fort Laramie
    During a conference that was held at Fort Larame, a treaty was formed between the Sioux and the U.S. government. This treaty was ment to bring peace between the whites and the Sioux who agreed to live in the Black Hills.
  • 1874 Discovery

    1874 Discovery
    In 1874 gold was discovered in the Black Hlls. It was discovered when Custer led an army to find it after hearing rumors. Prospectors swarmed into the area after George Custer found what he was looking for.
  • Battle of Little Bghorn

    Battle of Little Bghorn
    There were as many as 250 soldiers rounded up by Gearge Custer to defeat the Native Americans. Even though everyone thought that he would be victorius, he ended up getting beat. This was such a surprise because they under estimated the strength of the Native Americans.
  • Ghost Dance

    The Sioux was having their culture destroyed, so they used the Ghost Dance to express their culture and beliefs. Believing that their cheif, Sitting Bull, was the leader of a movment to ban the dance the police arrested the cheif. During a scuffle they shot him.
  • Wounded Knee

    Wounded Knee
    In southwestern South Dakota there s a creek called Wounded Knee. The army went there with intentons of collectng the Sioux's weapons. But after getting there a pistol was fired and the army had nothing to do but fire back. There ended up to be over 200 Sioux indians and 25 soldiers killed.
