    Columbus reached the Caribbean and the island of San Salvador on this day. This is important because his "discovery" brought North America to the attention of Europe.

    This colony was made for the search for gold. Since they spent all their time looking for it, they spent no time farming. The harsh winter killed almost all of them, since they had no food.

    Peter Minuit set up in the town that would later be called New Amsterdam. The Dutch West India Company wanted to expand, so they had him go. When Charles II became king, he granted the land to his brother, the Duke of York. His army invaded New Amsterdam and it became New York.

    This war was fought between the French and British. The Indians sided with the French, which is why is is called the French and Indian War. It lasted for 7 years, which is why it is also known as the Seven Years War. It officially ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1763.
