After a week-long vacation I finally got to meet one of my co-supervisors-and Director of the SALD office-Maribeth "Mo" Overland. Even from when we began email communication I could discern that Mo cutside the norm, even in a field as eclectic as Student Affairs. Like me, she likes to ask probing (and sometimes difficult) questions right off the bat. That's just her style. She is very grounded though in a belief of authentic leadership. More to come I'm sure....

Sat in with Orientation Coordinators as they had a "nuts & bolts" meeting with the various stakeholders on campus. This included a fauclty rep, the Director of Res Life, and an Academic Advisor. Mo encourages the OC's to meet face to face wtih campus official as much as possible. I was impressed that Mo asked the OC's to openly state their goals for the meeting. Pictured is the logo/theme for Orientation.

During the summer Mo likes to have retreat-esque staff developers in the afternoons. In additon to having someone in the group provide an activity, everyone has to answer 5 questions:
    1) What professional goal did you accoomplish this week?
    2) What is on your front burner?
    3) What is on the back burner?
    4) What do you need help with?
    5) What do you hope accomplish next week? The activity was basically a pick a color for each day of the week and what it means to you.

The first thing I did this morning was ask Mo how someone can be an authentic leader when you work with so many different "numbers" and/or personalities. Basically she said that a good leader uses all those Ennegram numbers each day. I spent a good chunk of the day helping Meggan take materials over to St. Johns for storage in their Student Untion (Sexton Hall). I was impressed with organization space they had as it was very conducive to collaboration.

Today, Meggan and Mo were gone a retreat so I spent a good part of the morning reading up on the various Ennegram types and quizing myself to determine how close I was to certain numbers. I still think I'm a solid five, but we'll see. For lunch, the remaining staff invited me to go to Kay Kitchen It's basically the Stoby's of St. Joseph. Naturally, I got the buffet which was full of some tasty mealoaf. All the work aside, I really valued socalizing with the staff in an informal setting.

-Finished logisitics regarding Inspiring Leaders Certificate Program (ILCP) Summer Surge. Classes will begin next Monday.
-Traveled with Orientation Coordinators to St. John's to discuss security measures with Campus Security regarding Move-in day for SJU

Now that the summer leadership courses are finally set up, I've now concentrated on looking through materials related to the fall student club training as that will be my next project. I've spoken with many of those involved in past years trainings and I think I have a good framework of where I want to go with it. The SALD office does a good job of tracking feedback from past years and I think that will helpful in creating a productive training.

This morning I went through the very rought draft of what I was looking to plan for the fall club training. The rest of the afternoon the entire SALDO staff drove to Mo's house for our weekly Wednesday Staff Development afternoon. We were assigned cooking groups and we were supposed to cook something based off the principle of Exemplary Leadership. Our group was "Challenge the Process" Here is a picture of some of our staff after cooking

This morning I circled around both campuses posting flyers for the frequently mentioned ILCP Summer Surge program that will be running through most of the summer. I tried to also use it as a chance to get to know the two campuses Spent a lot of the afternoon trying to get up to date with this internship wiki. I also had a long chat with Mo about the Ennegram. I can't wait to bring this activity to my RA staff. Did you know Obama is 3?

About ten of us gathered in the lobby to watch the US soccer game in the morning. (doesn't count towards hours) The rest of the day was geared towards setting up for the Summer Splurge event. Basically they got a bunch of food, live music, and giant inflatibles (which were suprisingly fun for adults). There are about two hundred students working campus between the two campuses and there has been a push from administration to program in the summer for these students

-Spent a good part of the morning observing the Orientation Coordinators as they looked through applications for ECAC's. Which apparently are Orientation Leaders for this summer that would be trainied in as the next Orientation Coordinators for 2011
-We had our first summer surge ILCP class today: The Enneagram Game. We had about 10 folks there, which I thought was a decent turnout. Mo and Meggan are hoping for more this week .

Today was John Deere day. Gwen, the Asst. Director of the office celebrates this by cooking and baking green and gold related items. Her family in Blue Earth, Minnesota own and run a John Deere store, so she celebrates customer appreciation day with us at the office. We had our second ILCP class today: Leadership Personality I, A lot of it dealt with the Enneagram Personality Model I've talked about before. Although I'm pretty sure I still register as a 5, I second-guess myself often.

Spent the morning watching the US soccer team face Aleriga in the World Cup along with some other dedicated co-workers. Being that it was Wednesday, we had our weekly staff development lunch. It was Gwen's turn to faciliate. She started off by asking a few softballs (what key on a keyboard woul you be) but then got into more serious questions such as: what are you on your journey with diversity. Mo also asked us to relate many of our answers to the Five Principles of Exemplary Leadership

During our staff meeting yesterday I publically announced I was trying to move into the 21st century with technology. I've watched my cohort out-fancy me and I'm sick of watching the same happen with my co-workers in the SALDO office.
So therefore, I created a pie-graph (with the help of the OC's) that illustrates what activities SALDO office staff do besides working. Today's ILCP class was "Molding your Mantra." This included writing a personal mission statement.

-Came up with an initial plan to incorporate advisors into the fall club training: A roundtable panel featuring three club advisors from the three seperate areas (academic, special interest, sports clubs). -Spent a couple hours at SJU meeting Torry, the new Assistant Director of Housing. Had a great time picking his brain about his journey. Turns out he has spent time in Finnancial Aid, and First Year Programs. Got to tour SJU's new housing complex, "Flynntown,"

-Mo asked all the new office workers--including myself--to take the Instinctual Variant Questionnaire from the Enneagram Institute. My results aren't clear to me so I'm curious to hear what Mo says about it -Developed questionaire for the club advisors. Mo made a lot of shrewd modificiations to it. It should give us a good idea as to whether or not we can pull off a solid advisor training -Had long talk with Gwen about being a liberal/progressive while being a devoted Catholic.

-Helped move more office supplies to St. Johns. -Gwen (Asst. Director) does all the contracts for events so I'm looking forward to her showing me how to do one. I asked that the fictional event be a Bruce Springsteen concert. -Setup a meeting on Thursday with Catherine Stoch, she works in university advancement and apparently specializes in grant writing -The pic included is from the SALD's bingo event in Brother Willie's Pub. Great turnout, probably close to 30 students!

-Started a PowerPoint on my experience here. I'm not sure if this is requried as part of my internship credit but I'm going to do it anyway because I'm still embarrassed about how asthetically bland my PP's were in my classes. -After our weekly staff meeting Mo posed this question to me: "If you were the director of your dream department, would you choose someone (Asst. Director) who had the skils you wanted or the attitude or personality you desired." Chew on that.....
  • CSB/SJU Internship (5.5)

-Continued working on my PowerPoint. Spoke briefly with a graduate student from SCSU who was doing practicum work related to leadership development. -I'm leaving early today because pretty much everyone else has. Mo is all but banning us from coming to the office Friday and Monday (once again, the philosophy of not living to work, but working to live). I'll be working Tuesday and then leaving for a camping trip the rest of the week.
  • CSB/SJU Internship (7.5)

-Not a lot going on this weeek, I leave for a camping trip tomorrow that will take up the rest of the week
-Had a conversation with Mo about why their new student orientation is successful. Main point there was focusing on quality of activities, not quanity stuff that "test limits of human endurance"
-For the afternoon, Mo faciliated a staff development meeting related to the Enneagram's Instinctual Variant Questionnaire. Since I'm running out of room to write here I suggest you look it up.
  • CSB/SJU Internship (8)

-ILCP classes started up again today. Meggan and I spend a good portion of the morning chalking both campuses. Although it's always good to get out of the "bunker," chalking on your knees for three hours isn't easy. Talked to Trish (office manager) about student fees and how much that adds to the total bill. It's interesting because although there are a fewer number of fees, they appear to be hefty in price. I'll try to link you to the document listing them out.

Today, I joined Gwen (Asst. Director) on a road trip to St. Peters MN, home of Gustavus Adolphus College. There, we participated in a roundtable of Student Actitivies Directors from around the state. Although most were from similar private colleges, a few two-year schools were represented, as well as the U of Minnesota. Discussion highlights/tidbits:
-Travel policies (do advisors need to go? risk management)
-"Sometimes I feel more like a lawyer"
-Campus movie showings (what comany do you use

-Stuffed folders with OC's for a bit. I of course took mental notes of what was included in their oreintation binders. -Compiled advisor feedback from the questionaire we sent out a few weeks ago -Started work on my fall club training recommendation -Facilitated/Hosted ILCP course "Information Challenges from a Values Perspective" It was taught by one of the sisters. I found it interesting, but many of the students didn't seem engaged.

-Had a great meeting with Catherine Stoch in foundation relations at CSB. Catherine spents a great deal of her time working with faculty and administration on grant writing. It was good to have a little more awareness of grants before I begin the course this fall. -I once again facilitated the ILCP class today: "Leadership Grounded in Benedictine Values." It was taught by Fr. Tom Andert. As part of the education faculty and vp to the monastery cabinet, he was engaging, funny, and insightfu

-Kept working on my recommendation for fall club training
  • CSB/SJU Internship (5)

-Continued working on Fall Club Training recommendation -Spent time with Gwen going over contracts, in particular bands that have come to campus. I doubt I'll be in a student activities position that requries it, but it's certainly helpful if I ever get into administration. -Facilitated another ILCP course: It's hard to get there if you don't know where you're going. It was mainly geared towards determining values and setting life goals.
  • CSB/SJU Internship (8.5)

Continued work on Fall Club Training Recommendation
-Met with Mike Ewing/Director of Health/Counseling Services. Conversation topics included: depression in college students, loco parentis, and the fact that you can over-document as well under-document. Yet another great person to meet on campus before I leave
-Facilitated today's ILCP class: Money Management for Bennies & Johnnies. The presenter, Stuart Perry, was actually a graduate of a MSMU college student personnel program
  • CSB/SJU Internship (8)

-Continued working on Fall Club Recommendation -Participated in final staff-developer luncheon. I got to facilitate two lies & a truth -ILCP session today was: "Presentation Skills." It was facilitated by Shelby Wentworth, Assistant Director of Residential Life at St. Ben's.
  • CSB/SJU Internship (3)

-Final day at the office -Still need to wrap up my fall club recommendation -Had some last-minute fun by wrapping up Meggan's (ILCP student manager) desk supplies in gift wrap. She's on vacation so I'll never get to see her reaction when she gets back on Monday.
