    Russia worked hard to keep up with the world's industrial growth. Czar Nicholas wanted to be more like Western European countries. This led to problems in Russia. The growth of factories had hard working conditions, low wages, and child labor.

    Nicholas continued the Russian tradition of autocracy. He imposed the idea of western industrialization with his minister. He wanted to "move forward". By the late 1800's the Russians produced the 4th most steel in the world.

    Several revolutionary groups began to grow as a result of industrial factors. Karl Marx started the most major group, HE believed the proletariats would and can rule the country.

    200,000 workers created a petition for better working conditions and marched to the czar's Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. Czar Nicholas was furious and ordered his soldiers to shoot the protestors. 1,000's were wounded and hundreds died.

    Czar Nicholas decides to bring Russia into the war. The Russians however were not ready for the Germans. The Germans had better weopons and technology and defeated the Russians. The Russians involvement in World War I was a failure.

    Women started a strike against the governement in Petrograd. 200,000 led a major strike and shouted statements such as, "Down with autocracy", "Down with the war". Soldiers ignored their orders and sided the women.

    Czar Nicholas gave up his throne after the March Revolution. The March Revolution succeeded in bringing down the czar. in 1918, former czar Nicholas and his family were executed.

    The Bolsheviks and Lenin soon took over Petrograd and other major Russian cities. Lenin's ideas were granted by the people.

    Lenin now leads the Russians. Lenin imposed ideas such as distributing land to the peasants. He allowed workers to control factories. He finally had a talk with the Germans to stop all fighting and sign a peace treaty.

    Lenin suffered a stroke in 1922, putting Joseph Stalin into power. He suggested the idea of communism in Russia. He then had total command of the Communist party in Russia. Lenin believed Stalin was too powerful, Stalin later proves Lenin right.
