The British and the French government had entered into a number of secret treaties during the war. They had promised Japan special treatment in Asia. Undert the Traty of London of 1915 Italy had agree to join the allies in return for the promise of gains from Austria-Hungary. Japan and Italy now expected to be given their revards.

War on Germany

The u-boat campaing helped to bring America into the war on the side of Britain and France. By 1917 U-boats were trying to sink any ship the might be trading with Britain. This involved attacks on Amercian ships. The Amercian government responded by declaring war on Germany in April 1917.

The Armistice

The German generals decided that they were about to be defeated and the German government asked the Amercian President Wilson for peace. There was an agreement to stop fighting on 11 November 1918. This agreement was called the Armistice.
