Jon Krakauer Mount Everest Expedition

  • Jon got a call from Rob Hall saying they had room on the expedition for him.

    To go on an Everest Expedition, you pay around $65,000. Sometimes it can be difficult to get on an expedition. This was Jon's second attempt. Only a few people may go on an expedition in one group.

    Edema is a swelling usually in the legs, feet, or ankles. The swelling is caused by fluid trapped in body tissues. It is caused by gravity pushing blood and fluids down into your legs.
  • Nawang is very sick with edema.

  • Guide ropes need to be fixed at the South Col.

  • Nawang gets rushed down the mountain to Katmandu.

  • They descended back to Camp 2 for a rest.

  • They left the base, and Scott Fishers crew looks good.

  • Jon separates a rib while coughing.

  • Jon hasn't slept or ate in 57 hours.

  • Chen Nu-Yan fell into a crevass and he survived, but died later.

    To date, 179 people have died trying to climb Mount Everest. More people died in the 1990's, but today better equipment and more experienced guides are provided, bringing the death and injury numbers down. In 1996, around 19 people died trying to reach the summit because of a deadly storm.

  • Rob Hall called his wife and told her not to worry.

    When Rob Hall called his wife, it was the last time anyone heard from him. He said "Sleep well my sweetheart. Please don't worry too much." At the time that this expedition was going on, Rob Hall's wife, Jan Arnold, was pregnant with their first child. Rob would never get to see his daughter.
  • Scott Fisher was buried above the South Col.

  • Rob Hall's body was found.

    Rob Hall was a very experienced mountain climber. In 1990, he climbed the highest points in all the continents in 6 hours short of 7 months. Also that year, it was the first time he reached the summit of Mount Everest. Seeing an amazing mountain climber like that die must have been a tragedy.
