  • Harold Holt becomes Prime Minister of Australia

    His reign was cut short after he was reportedly declared to be drowned. He introduced the system of Decimal Currency.

    This day (Australia Day), Jane,Arnna and Grant, all under the age of ten, left their home to go to the beach and unfortunately did not return. Their disappearance is still a mystery 40 years on.
  • Decimal Currency Comes to Australia

    This marks the introduction of the now, widely used, decimal system for currency. It replaces the confusing system of pence and shillings. A relatively accurate conversion rate is one Australian cent was worth about 1.2 pence.

    The well-recognised Brisbane, Queensland, and Australian Rugby League player was born on this day.

    On this day, was a gruesome encounter of the Viet Cong, by the Australian troops.
  • Aboriginal Strike

    On Wave Hill Cattle Station, there was a strike of 200 Aboriginals wanting a wage of $50 a week.
  • Chinese Mayor

    In Darwin, it was officially declared that Harry Chan was to be the mayor. This was a first for the kind of originality, and reinforced the notion of Australia moving towards multiculturalism.
