  • Dakota War of 1862

    Dakota War of 1862
    Learn more about the Minnesota Massacre Beginning with five American settlers being killed while Dakota men were on a hunting exploration, the Dakota War of 1862 was a contemplation of small battles. The war was also called the "Minnesota Massacre, Sioux Uprising, or Dakota Conflict." The Native Americans continued the battles in hopes of driving the whites off the land. The war had one of the largest civilian death tolls. As a result, the Native American people lost their reservation land, were hanged, or imprisioned.
  • Red Cloud's War

    Red Cloud's War
    Red Cloud was known as one of the most important Sioux leaders. Red Cloud's War was fought over the Powder River War which lay along the Bozeman trail, a trail leading to gold. The trail went directly through the Sioux hunting ground and as white settlers began the search for gold, the hunting ground became no more. The Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 ended this war. Red Cloud was the only leader to win a battle against the United States.

  • Great Sioux War of 1876-77

    Great Sioux War of 1876-77
    Also known as the Black Hills war, it was a series of multiple wars. Many settlers were coming across the land, given to the Sioux in the Fort Laramie Treaty, and interferring with their rights. Battles broke out continusously and a new treaty had to be created. The treaty involved the Sioux giving up part of their land in exchange for an extension in the opposite direction.
  • Battle of the Rosebud

    Battle of the Rosebud
    Lakota and Cheyenne tribes migrated to the Rosebud Valley in Montana Territory after previous negotiations pertaining to the Black Hills fell through. General George Cook was informed of the large group of Indians and moved soldiars in to remove them from the land. Crazy Horse moved troops in on Cook's men on the 17th at Rosebud Creek. The battle ended in a standstill. Around 10 casualties and 21 wounded were the numbers on both sides.
  • Battle of Little Big Horn

    Battle of Little Big Horn
    Little Big Horn Song This battle is also known as "Custer's Last Stand." It was a victory for the Lakota and Northern Cheyenne people. The battle was led by Sitting Bull. They went to battle against Gen. Custer's U.S. Seventh Calvery who's goal was to contain all of the Sioux and force them onto reservations. None of Custer's 225 men survived the attack, including Custer himself.

  • Ghost Dance

    The Ghost Dance spread across the Dakota territory in hopes of recovering Indian land. The dance was a ritual where the Natives wore bright colored shirts and danced to help bury the white people and restore the village.
  • Sitting Bull's Death

    In an attempt to capture Sitting Bull, a native leader of the Sioux and follwers of the Ghost Dance. During the attempt to arrest Sitting Bull, he was killed instead.
  • Massacre at Wounded Knee

    Massacre at Wounded Knee
    Photos of Wounded Knee This battle has been known as the last true fight between the white people and the Native Americans. After Sitting Bull's death, Big Foot lead the Sioux toward the Pine Ridge Reservation. The tribe was stopped short and led to Wounded Knee to camp out. Continuous fire bombarded the camp, while the Sioux had nothing to protect themselves. In the end, 300 Sioux and 25 soldiars lost their lives.
