The Trail of Tears was when the government forced about 60,000 American Indians to leave there homes. Native Americans were marched over 1,200 miles of rugged land. Over 4,000 of them died from diseases, famine, and warfare. They were marched from the Mississippi river to lands in the west. It took them more than 4 months to make the 800 mile journey.
