Martin Luther King helped set our nation on the right path and paved the way for great change,

    Black Enterprise
    Black Enterprise was started by Earl Graves and is known as the "premier business news and investment resource for African Americans". It is the first publication of its time and is still a influential African American magazine. SInce the magazine more African American publications have come out but Black Enterprise was the first to aim at the new and growing middle class of Amfrican American during the 70's.

    Congressional Black Caucus
    The Congressional Black Caucus was started to bring an African American voice to congress. Its an all African American group with the goal of "positively influencing the course of events pertinent to African-Americans and others of similar experience and situation", and "achieving greater equity for persons of African descent in the design and content of domestic and international programs and services." This was the first group of its kind and gave a powerful voice to African Americans.

The organization made major strides in getting government support and public awarness about social justice issues. Jackson has helped to promote African American economic status and education.

    In 1972 The Equal Employment Oppertunity Act was passed prohibiting discrimination in the workplace based on things such as a persons race. It also helped promote affirmative action in the U.S. This act gave African Americans more job oppertunities and allowed them to acheieve a better living than earlier because they were able to get the same jobs as whites and not be discriminated against in the work force.

    Reginald Lewis took over Beatrice International Food Company making him the first African American ever to own a bussiness earning over 1 billion in sales. He helped pave the way for African Americans in big bussiness.
  • MOVE Bombing

    MOVE Bombing
    MOVE is a black liberation group who live in communtities and fight amd protest for causes in and outside of the African American issues. in 1978 the group found itself in a stand off with police in there own neighborhood due to several small criminal infractions. In the end the police bombed the whole block killing 11 and leaving 60 homeless.It was later taken to court were the suviors were compensated and it was decided the police action was exsessive and unnessary.

    Regents of the University of California v. Bakke
    The supreme court decided collages could use race as a deciding factor for collage admissions. This was a very contervercial case during the time because it went against affirmative action and was opposite of what the rest of the nation was trying to do during that time which was integrate schools. This case was influential becuase of peoples outrage over the verdict led to several more cases continuing into modern times over the role of race in collage admissions.

    BET not only was the first African American targeted network but it also was the first African American company on the New York Stock exchange. The network has helped propel African American entertainment and shows what a long way our country has come from the days wen African Americans could hardly even get air time.

    Oprah Winfrey was the first African American female host of a talk show. The show was also hugely popular and viewd by millions until 2011 when the show ended. Oprah built an empire under her including her own production studio and schools for girls in Africa. She has been the richest female and African American in our country and named the greatest African American philanthropist of all time. She has set a path of empowerment and strength for other African American women.

    The Cosby show was a telvision sitcom staring Bill Cosby about an African American family. The show aired for 8 seasons making it one of the most popular shows during the 80's and even today. The show helped brake the sterotypes of African Americans during that time by showing a positive and entertaining veiw of African Americans. Most people had never seen that veiw before of African Americans in media and it helped change peoples minds and veiw of African Americans more positisitively,

    This act modified the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and gave empolyees the right to sue their employers in cases of discrimination in the workplace. The act has given all not just African Americans to take action and defend them selves in court when being discriminated against which prior was not allowed.

She was also one of the founding members of Congressional Black Caucus in 1971 as well as improving life in inner cities. Chisholm has paved the way for African American women in government and was one of the voices of the African American community after Kings death.
