    Mao and wife, Jiang Qing, critique arts for being not very communist and everybody sees the critiques. Mao then replaces people in government positions with friends he trusted.

    the Cultural revolution unofficially began with the politburo issuing the may 16 circular which stated that the bourgeoisie had sneaked into various spheres of culture. Mao then tells students or the red guards to hunt for revisionists and struggle against enemies which a lot of students do by criticising school authorities

    a teacher writes the first marxist dazibao, aposter with big words on it, criticising some university professors who he thought were anti communism. after this more students used dazibao as a revolutionary tool and would put them up at schools and other areas.

    The first group of red guards stationed at beijing university to eliminate intellectuals and maos enemies. like a wild fire(exponentually) more and more students join the red guard for revolution and for other reasons.

  • sixteen points directive

    the eighth central committee of the CCP passes a documents supporting Mao's economic policies and the red guard. The sixteen points say the target of the revolution are also capitalist roadies, and this marks the official beginning of the cultural revolution.

    Mao meets the red guards in beijing and gives them his blessing to destroy the old ways.This is the first of many where Mao encourages them and they chant with their little red books in the air

    The red guards do alot of ransacking, getting rid of old stuff and belongings of rich people. The red guard is divided and certain people are only out for themselves, many politicians are sapped of power.

    Many worship Mao and his image is everywhere, in newspapers, posters, etc., and many own his red book(many are illiterate) but noone has seen him in person. at this time, Mao doesn't have control over activities of the red guard, The red guards chaos worries Mao.
  • ninth congress of the CCP

    The ninth congress of the CCP convenes and they applaud the revolution, lin biao is promoted to vice chairman and is declared the successor of Mao. This marks the new phase of the revolution which focused on rebuilding the party.
  • the Lin Biao affair

    Mao becomes suspicious of Lin biao, after his asking for promotions and in the end the chinese government says Lin and some other people tried to assasinate Mao and Lins reputation was destroyed, then he craqshed in a plane. Many people started questioning Mao because this man who Mao had said was their dude was a traitor, so they started thinking "what other stuff has he gotten wrong?"
  • criticize Lin Biao, Criticize confucius campaign

    Jiang qing initiates the campaign to blame lin for all the mistakes of the revolution thus far, even the economic problems.This was a bit of a criticism of Zhou Enlai, who supported Lins and confucius' ideas, the chinese people aren't really swayed by the campaigns.
  • Events leading to end of the cultural revolution

    Mao dies and leaves Hua Guofeng as chairman of CCP who orders arrest of Jiang Qing and her supporters and labels them the gang of four and it marks the end of the cultural revolution. In the end they blames lin and the gang of four for all the mistakes from the revolution.

    Zhou Enlau got ill with Cancer and then died, he was very respected and thus many people came. Atendees used this as a time to commemorate Zhou and criticize Jiang qing and in the end her group took down Zhou memorials.
