  • 1962

    James Meredith became the first black student to enroll at the University of Mississippi.
  • 1963

    Martin Luther King is arrested during the protests in Birmingham. He wrote a seminal letter from Birmingham jail.
  • 1964

    3 civil rights workers are found in an earthen dam a few weeks later into a federal investigation backed by the president.
  • 1965

    Black people begins a march to Montgomery to protest about their voting rights but they are stopped by the police. There were about 50 casualties and the incident is referred as "Bloody Sunday" by the media.
  • 1967

    A leader of the Student Nonviolent Committee, commented about "black power" during a speech in Seattle. His definition of "black power" meaning that all the black people come together and fight for their liberation by any means.
  • 1968

    Martin Luther King was shot when he was standing in the balcony of the hotel room. James Earl Ray is convicted of the crime.
