1955 – 1975

  • The Space Race Began

    On August 2, 1955, the Soviet Union declared that they would launch a satellite in space in order to compete with the United States who announced they were doing the same thing a few days prior. This set the stage for the two nations to compete with each other for the next few years.
  • Rosa Parks Arrested

    On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested on a bus home for refusing to give up a seat on a bus to a white man. This technically violated the segregation laws at this time.
  • Little Rock Nine

    On September 4, 1957, at Central High School In Little Rock, Arkansas nine African American students arrived and began their schooling at a public school and began desegregation.
  • United States Launches First Satellite

    On January 31, 1958, Explorer 1 was launched into space and from that, the US was able to collect data they never had before, this event was a milestone in the space race.
  • JFK Becomes the Elected President

    On November 8, 1960, John F. Kennedy, a member of the Democratic Party became the 35th president of the United States by defeating Richard Nixon, a member of the Republic party, in the Presidential election of 1960. JFK made history as the youngest president yet.
  • Bay of Pigs

    The Bay of Pigs was a failed invasion supported largely by the United States in Cuba in an attempt to overthrow the Castro regime. the Invasion was planned throughout the Eisenhower presidency and executed under the Kennedy presidency.
  • The Assassination of MLK

    Martin Luther King Jr., a Baptist minister, civil rights activist, and iconic leader of the Civil Rights Movement in America was unfortunately assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee.
  • The Resignation of President Nixon

    Due to the Watergate scandal, Nixon lost a lot of his political support and faced impeachment, so on August 9, 1974, Nixon made history by becoming the first president in America to resign.
