  • Uncle tom's Cabin

    This is a book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe about the cruelty of slavery, it became extremely popular around the world. It also increased turmoil between the north and south, because the north was given even more reason to stop slavery, and the south believed the north was over exaggerating slavery to recruit people.
  • Republican Party

    The republican party formed in response to the Kansas-Nebraska act and the spread of slavery in the west. Abraham Lincoln was the first republican president.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    This act allowed the people who colonized Kansas and Nebraska to vote on whether their state would allow slavery, this cause tension and eventually wide spread violence in the area between northern and southern colonizers.
  • Bloody Kansas

    The conflict was basically the Kansas civil war, as southerners and northerners flooded into Kansas due to the Kansas-Nebraska act, violence broke out and lasted for 6 years.
  • Brooke-Sumner Incident

    During a debate over slaver in Kansas, slavery supporter Brooks began beating Sumner with his cane which was highly supported by other slavery supporters.
  • House devided speech

    This was a speech by Lincoln about the escalation of the debate over slavery and how they needed to make peace before war broke out.
  • Election of 1856

    The south elected democratic candidate Buchanan, because he more supported their views unlike the formally, more split, president.
  • Lecompton Constitution

    This was one of the four constitutions suggested for the new state of Kansas, it was created by the Pro-slavery colonizers who wanted to stop the abolishment of slavery in Kansas.
  • Dred Scott

    Dred was a slave who's owner had died, he fought for freedom eventually making it to the supreme court. His argument was that since he had spent time in free states he should be allowed citizenship and be set free. The supreme court ruled against him and ruled that no person of African decent could become a citizen.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debates

    There were 7 total debates between Lincoln and Douglas about whether slavery should be completely abolished or allowed in certain places.
  • John Brown

    John brown was an abolitionist that was hanged for treason after attacking a weaponry on his quest he believed was given to him by god to end slavery.

    Harper's Ferry

    Harper's Ferry was a weaponry that was raided by John Brown and 21 of his followers as an attempt to create a rebellion in the south against slavery. This was considered an act of treason and several people were killed, so John Brown was hanged for his crimes.
  • Secession

    When Lincoln became president 11 more states succeeded from the union, the resulted in Lincoln moving troops into South Carolina and the start of the war.
  • Election of 1860

    Lincoln won the election for the republican party which resulted in even more states leaving the union and eventually the start of the civil war.
  • Lincoln's First Inaugural Address

    His address focused on the position of slavery in the nation and the souths succession from the union. He attempted to get support from the south by claiming he would allow slavery in the south but keep it abolished in the north.
