Uncle Tom’s Cabin was a bestseller by Harriet Beecher Stowe as it described the horrors of slavery and the terrible conditions which made the North morally question slavery and harden the anti-slavery sentiment. While in the South they stated the tale misrepresented slavery. -
Kansas Nebraska Act
The Kansas-Nebraska Act let the states decide whether or not to allow slavery within their borders. So they didn’t have to fight over it becoming a free or slave state for outside reasons. Also, repealing the Missouri Compromise of 1820, making it that the latitude 36°30 wasn’t a factor in whether a state was a free or slave state. Causing people to fight wheater it was going to be a free or slave state as each wanted votes for their side. -
Republican Party Founded
The Republican Party Founded in response of the Kansas-Nebraska Act and went against it made up of Northern workers and businessmen, they fought against slavery and the acts that protected slavery. This party was very unpopular and disliked in the South as the party wanted to stop the expansion of slavery. -

Caused by the Kansas-Nebraska act, This period of time was when war was going on between the pro-slavery and anti. Popular sovierty allowed states to allow slavery. People from outside voting making pro slavery win in Kansas. It causes a target, and people begin the violence. People kill each other, destroy town of Lawrence, two governments. John Brown participiating my killing people pro slavery. One of the effects was the start of the Civil war, Kansas was declared a free state. -
Brooks- Summer incident
This incident was another cause leading to Civil war. This was during Sumner gave out his speech directed to a problem in Kansas debating for a slave or free state. On the senate floor Brooks attacks him, specifically with a cane, hurting Summer badly. This was over the expansion of slavery, he was then favored by the South, even had canes sent to him. Somner was not a senate for a while, amd faces some hatred. -
election of 1856
This election was known as a bitter one, occuring in the midst of the Kansas civil war. James Buchanan got selected for a less controversial candidate. The election was split into rigid sectional lines. In this election there was John C. who was among slavery wanting to expland it,. His thoughts on slavery was that antislavery would cause civil war. Believed in popular sovereignty. In the end Buchanana won this election. Democrats saw the republican as a growth in radicalism. He won by 174-114. -
Dred Scott (issues)
The Dred Scott decision was between Sanford. The issues include: Dred being a citizen, did he have rights to sue for protection of rights, were free man allowed to residency in their territory, and lastly, Was it constitutional for congress to band slavery during the Missouri compromise. -
Dred Scott (effects)
This decision states the Missouri compromise was unconstitutional. Dred wasn't a citizen. Many tensions arise between North and South. Received rights of abolishment and citizenship after civil war, which this decision led to. -
LeCrompton constitution
A constitution known to declare Kansas as a free state. It was a constitution declaring slavery in Kansas. Its purpose was to protect slavery, and to prevent free people from bill of rights. The people were allowed to approve slavery, approve coonstituion without it, or not accept any of the constitution. Douglas believed it should be popular sovereignty, and James was supportive towards it. This constitution was never passed meaning Kansas stayed a free state.(Tipeka ) -
House divided speech
n 1858 in the state convention Lincoln gives out his speech. Stating that the Dred Scott had already started slavery in the North. He believed he needed to act as quick as possible if the U.S wanted to be free. He states, “ A house divided against itself can not stand” he wanted them to be free. He refers to God because he wanted them to stay united, and slavery will cause division. -
Lincoln Douglas Debates
They were debates during the 1858 election campaign for U.S. senator from Illinois between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas. Leading to the southern states, not liking and voting for Douglas in the presidential election two years later. Stating “Slavery cannot exist a day or an hour anywhere," he declared, "unless it is supported by local police regulations ” as he believed that residents of a territory could exclude slavery by refusing to pass laws that protect and allow slavery. -
Harpers Ferry
At Harper’s Ferry John Brown led a raid on a group of people with the goal of liberating slaves as he led the armed slaves he raided a federal armory. Leading to the North and South becoming divided whether this raid was good or bad. As he attempted to steal weapons to give to the slaves to allow them to fight back and become free to attack the slave owners. Angering Southerners as they saw this as a terrible act of violence but the North saw his intentions good as he was freeing slaves. -

Executed on charges of treason, murder, and insurrection sliting the North and South as angering Southerners as they saw this as a terrible act of violence through his raid but the North saw his intentions good as he was freeing slaves. -

The election of 1860 was between Abraham Lincoln and John C. Breckinridge. The election Lincoln won was only through the Electoral College as none of the Southern states voted for him leading to them hating the system and believing it unfair. Dividing the nation was a major reason for succession as Lincoln was an abolitionist that believed was going to take away their slaves. -

There was a succession of 11 states from the Union after Lincoln was elected into office. Those being South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee in that order. Due to issues of slavery and the election that Lincoln won was only through the Electoral College as non of the Southern states voting for him leading to them hating the system and believing it unfair. -

In Lincoln's address he stated he would not interfere with southern peoples slaves, and had no intentions of doing so . His purpose was to unite them, they could not be enemies, he was a strong believer of the union staying united, not broken. He addresses that his job was to protect, occupy, hold the government/ territories involved.
