1800-1876 Timeline

  • The Election of 1800

    Previous president of 4 years, President Adams was met with little to no support when he attempted to run for President again. The presidential race ended in a tie between Thomas Jefferson of Virginia and Aaron Burr of New York. Eventually Jefferson won the presidential election.
  • The Revival of the Second Great Awakening

    Occurred in Cane Ridge, Kentucky. Preachers of all different backgrounds started preaching passionate sermons to the audience. The people listening to these sermons and teachings eventually felt so moved by the teachings that they would cry, jump, fait, and even speak in tongues.

    War of 1812

    Caused by America's desire to be a neutral trading nation during the Anglo-French wars. Main in the war being America and Great Britain. "Ended" with the signing of the Treaty of Ghent on December 24, 1814, but actually ended February 17, 1815 after the Battle of New Orleans.
  • United States' First Long-Distanced Rail Line

    Launched from Maryland in 18277 by B&O's Railroad Company founders in hopes of the line funneling agriculture products of the trans-Appalachian West to an outlet on Chesapeake Bay.
  • The Panic of 1837

    America's economic bubbles began to burst and federal land sales plummeted. Customers were not able to change their bank notes for hard currency and the New York band were running out of gold and silver. This led to a general economic depression.

    Irish Immigrants Come to America

    1.7 million Irish fled oppressive English policies and starvation to come to America where they worked manual unskilled labor and were faced with a lot of anti-immigrant beliefs. In anti-immigrant newspapers in northern cities, they were often compared to African Americans and were portrayed with apelike features.
  • Child Labor Becomes a Big Problem

    The middle class supported the protection of child laborers more than adult workers. Massachusetts later passed a paw prohibiting children under the age of 12 to work for longer than 10 hours a day.
  • Fugitive Slave Act of 1850

    Made to harshly punish officials who did not arrest run away slaves and the people who tried to help the slaves escape. The passing of this act brought on a very violent period of antislavery throughout America.

    The Civil War

    A war between the Union and the Confederacy over slavery. The Union defeated the Confederacy and the war ended when Lee surrendered to Grant and Republicans drafted the 13th Amendment to ensure the permanent legal end of slavery.
