  • Washington DC

    In a compromise to initiate the American System, the U.S. Capital was moved from Philadelphia to the now current capital, Washington D.C., in the year 1800.
  • Peaceful Revolution

    Also in the year 1800, the nation cast votes to elect the next president. Adams, a federalist and the previous president, lost, resulting in the “Quiet Revolution” when the Federalist Party stepped down from executive power, and the Democratic Republicans took charge. This passivity signified a milestone in the effectiveness of American government. The election was a tie, however, between Jefferson and his future VP, Aaron Burr. Aaron Burr refused to step out of the race after this tie.
  • Louis and Clark

    The lewis and clark expedition was meant for lewis and clark to explore the new land that had been acquired and it establish an American presence in this territory before Britain and other European powers tried to claim it.
  • Louisiana purchase

    On April 30, 1803 the nation of France sold 828,000 square miles (2,144,510 square km) of land west of the Mississippi River to the United States of America in the Louisiana purchase.This great purchase was made by President Thomas Jefferson which was one of his greatest achievements, more than doubled the size of the United States.
  • Texas

    In 1835, Texas declared its independence from Mexico, although Mexico does not recognize that independence. The issue over the possible, and probable, future annexation of Texas fragments the the United States, and in an effort to do something productive with his presidency, John Tyler, a few years later, attempted everything within his legislatively limited executive influence to get it annexed.   • Mexican-American War

    In 1846, Polk, fiercely expansionist, prompts war with Mexico by placing soldiers on guard within disputed border between Mexico and the recently annexed Texas. The war goes extremely well for the united states, achieving Manifest Destiny within a span of two years.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

    In 1848, legislation ratified the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, giving the United States the right to purchase the future states of California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and a large portion of New Mexico and Colorado, for fifteen million dollars. Also, the United States assumed three million dollars of citizen debt. Meanwhile, Oregon was organized as a territory, an issue of some dispute, as Polk only managed to negotiate half of the fully disputed land with Britain even when the entire territory h
