    12 delegates from the 13 colonies met in Pennsylvania in response to the Coercive Acts passed by British Parliament
  • Lexington and Concord

    Lexington and Concord
    The first 2 official battles of the Revolutionary War. This was the night that Paul Revere allegedly rode through towns yelling "the British are coming". The first shot fired by the colonist at Concord was the "shot heard around the world"

    The war for independence in America. The war started with the battles for Lexington and Concord. The war was over when the peace treaty was signed in Paris
  • Declaration of Independence

    Declaration of Independence
    The 13 colonies officially declared independence from Great Britain and became the United States of America. We now celebrate July 4th as Independence day
  • Articles of Confederation

    Articles of Confederation
    The Articles of Confederation were the first attempt at the US constitution. This gave states more power than Congress because many people felt so controlled by the British that they did not want such a strong government. This ended up being the Article's downfall because it was too weak
  • The Treaty of Paris

    The Treaty of Paris
    The Treaty of Paris was signed in 1784 and Britain gave up the 13 colonies.

    Shay's Rebellion

    Shay's Rebellion started in Massachusetts with a bunch of farmers who fought in the Revolutionary War and because of the Articles of Confederation they were not being paid. This was the last straw in getting rid of the Articles.

    The constitutional convention originally met to discuss the weak Articles of Confederation but they ended up creating and signing the US Constitution Some notable members include Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, James Madison, and Benjamin Franklin.

    The Constitution was ratified and we still have it today. Some of the main ideas are popular sovereignty, checks and balances, separation of powers, and limited government. This guaranteed that the government had equal power.

    George Washington was a plantation owner and famous war general. He was very popular in the country and was seen at many important evens prior to his presidency

    The Bill of Rights were something that the Anti-Federalist wanted because they felt that without the government could encroach on their natural rights. Today this still protects us from an overpowering government

    Tripolitan War

    The war involved Barbary States pirates off of the North African coastline forcing the US to pay a tribute to protect Tripoli and then attacking it anyways. Jefferson brand new to office was a pacifist and sent ships to surround but not attack. William Eaton lead military coup and lead troops to Derna. The US won and the Marines were created!

    War of 1812

    The War of 1812 started because when Great Britain and France were at war the US decided to stay neutral however Great Britain began seizing trade ships headed for France. President Jefferson tried to hurt Great Britain with an embargo in 1807 but it only hurt the US. After the election in 1808 Madison became president and we went to war spring of 1812. In a crucial battle the Lafeat brother helped and we ended up winning the war! Lead to high morale and earned the US respect.

    This was the first protective tariff in the United States, placed taxes of imported goods that were also being made in the US. It would have usually been apposed but because passed because of high sense of nationalism

    Post War of 1812 there was a very strong sense of nationalism in the US. There were population booms, advances in transportation and industry, and more!
  • Panic of 1819!

    This was the first major depression at the time. It was caused by the Second National Bank allowing anyone to print money. Banks closed, money deflates unemployment and and bankruptcies skyrocketed.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    At the time there was a very fragile balance between the slave states and the free states, and there was an equal number of them. The Missouri Compromise made by Henry Clay was a way to keep that balance when Missouri applied to the union. It separated Maine from Mass. and formed a free state and close off the northern territory above the 30,36 parallel line. This was not a permanent fix, "just a band aid on a bullet wound"
  • Monroe Doctrine

    Monroe Doctrine
    The Monroe Doctrine was the US closing off the Western Hemisphere to further European exploration and in exchange the US would not interfere with international affairs of Europe. This once again proved nationalism in America and showed that we were on the way to becoming a world power.

    Population grows rapidly due to immigration

    The American population grew rapidly because of millions of immigrants from Ireland, Germany, and Western Europe. The potato famine in Ireland during that time lead to lots of people immigrating from Ireland and Germans flooded in to escape political prosecution

    This was the first battle of the Civil War at Fort Sumter. This is around Charleston, SC

    This war started by the Southern states succeeding from the Union to become the Confederate Sates. The southern states wanted to succeed because they felt the north didn't have their best interest and they were imposing on their rights. By the end it was mainly about slavery.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln to free any slaves in the Confederate States. This did not actually free any slaves because Lincoln had no control over the slaves in the south.

    This was the last major event in the Civil war. It was in Texas
  • Wilmington Race Riot

    Wilmington Race Riot
    In 1898 Wilmington was one of the leading cities in African American representation in politics. The coup was an attempt to regain control for the Democratic Party by white Wilmingtonians from African Americans. It started with the burning of an African American lead newspaper office and ended with lots of African Americans killed and many more run out of town. The leader of the coup became mayor by forcing the vote.
