    Amerigo Vespucci discovered America
    Amerigo Vespucci found America in 1497. Amerigo was born and raised in Florence, Italy. He was an explorer, financier, navigator and cartographer. He found the second super continent, it is believed that the name America came from the Latin version of his name.

    On the 26th of January 1788 the English sent over 160,000 convicts to Australia in 806 ships. The frist eleven of those 806 ships are today known as the First Fleet. Before this date there were 300,000 Aborigines living in Australia. The ships stopped only three times at Tenerife, Rio De Janeiro and Cape Town

    The smallpox outbreak happened in 1789. This deadly disease occurred soon after convicts arrived in Australia. The aboriginals believed that it was brought over from Europe to wipe out the entire aboriginal population.

    On the 10th of June 1838 a group of convicts murdered 28 aboriginals near Myall Creek station. Some of the killers were hanged as a result of this.

    The Australian gold rush happened between 1851 and 1899 and is widely regarded richest gold rush in the world. Australia's white population was 77,000 before the gold rush and soon sky rocketed to over 540,000. In 1852 alone there was more than 174 tonnes of gold found, equivalent to more than $20,000,000 dollars.

    On the 10th of July 1858 the Melbourne Football Club was introduced. The first unofficial game was on July 31st 1858 and the first official game was played between Scotch College and Melbourne Grammer on August the 7th. Australian Rules has since become Australia's favourite game with an average crowd of more than 30,000 people.

    Beginning in 1899, the boxers killed thousands of Chinese. After the 55 day siege the embassies were relieved by Japanese, American and European troops. To deal with the Boxer threat an alliance was formed by Austria-Hungary, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, Great Britain, and the United States.

    When Australia was overseas in war it caused great disruption to life at home. The war precautions act allowed Federal Government to control primary industry, international trade and immigration while Australia was at World War 1.

    In 1914 thousands of men volunteered to fight. The first major fighting for these men was what is known as the failed Gallipoli campaign. In Gallipoli it was the first time Australia and New Zealand soldiers fought under the name ANZAC.
