    Captain James Cook discovers Australia
    In 1770 Captain James Cook discovered Australia. This discovery was of huge significance to the world, especcially Great Britain, as it provided a place to send convicts. At this time Great Britain's prisons were becoming full and with this option it would have provided great relief.

    On the 4th July 1776, the thirteen colonies of America declared independence from Great Britain. This was a significant moment as it gave the people a voice, so that they could stand up to Great Britain. It gained America support from France, as they to were trying to become Independent from Great Britain. This resulted in the American Revolution and also helped the French revolt against King Louis.

    The Eureka Stockade took place in the Victorian Goldfields at Ballarat. At the time Ballarat was experiencing a gold rush and new authority and governments were not treating the miners well. Unfair laws and police corruption were a huge concern. Eventually the unrest amongst the miners led to a battle with local forces known as the Eureka Stockade. Today, the Eureka Stockade remains an important part of Ballarat's history.

    The American Civil War was incredibly important to modern day America. The war broke out as a result of the Southern states, know as the Confedorate States refusing to abolish slavery. The United States led by Abraham Lincoln eventually won the War after the Confedorate States surrended. Five days later Abraham Lincoln was assasinated.

    In 1912 the largest passenger ship to set sail left England for America. What was known as the 'Unsinkable Ship' soon came to hit an ice berg and ironically sink. Nearly all of the passengers on board died. Today the Titanic has been located and several artifects have been recovered.

    In 1918, one of the worst wars to ever affect the world came to an end. With 100s of thousands dead and countries turned into battlefields it was extremley devestating. Australians were amongst many other nations to have fought in places such as Turkey and France.
