    Italian physicist Alessandro Volta invented the Battery.
  • Thomas Jefferson inaugurated as third President

    served from March 4, 1801-March 1809 as a Democratic-Republican. Jefferson was one of the contributing writers of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson wished that America would become an "Empire of Liberty", representing the ideals of republicanism.
  • Louisianna Purchase

    The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 brought into the United States about 88,000 square miles of territory from France. This was the greatest land bargain in US history.
  • James Madison voted 4th President

    served from March 4, 1809-March 4, 1817 as a Democratic-Republican. Madison was known as "Father of the Constitution" and the writer of the Bill of Rights.
  • War of 1812

    The War of 1812 was a conflict fought between the United States and Great Britain. It ended with the exchange of ratifications of the Treaty of Ghent.
  • James Monroe becomes fifth President

    served from March 4, 1817-March 4, 1825 as a Democratic-Republican. Last of the Founding Father's to serve as President.
  • Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise was passed in 1820 was a settlement reached between the pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions in Congress and their opposing views on the extension of slavery into new territories. The legislation admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    The Monroe Doctrine forbade European interference in the American hemisphere but also asserted US neutrality in regard to future European conflicts.
  • John Quincy Adams becomes President

    served from March 4 ,1825-March 4, 1829 as a Democratic-Republican. Adams served both Senate and House of Representatives.
  • Andrew Jackson appointed President

    served from March 4, 1829-March 4, 1937 as a Democratic. Jackson was know as "Old Hickory" for his aggressive character. His policies established what was known as "Jacksonian Democracy" which opposed monopoly of the government.
  • Martin Van Buren named 8th President

    served from March 4, 1837-March 4, 1841 as a Democratic. He was an essential individual in the development of Jacksonian democracy as he served as Andrew Jackson's Secretary of State and Vice President. He was in office during the Panic of 1837 so he is often blamed for this event.
  • William Henry Harrison voted as President

    served from March 4,1841-April 4, 1841 as a Whig. He died of pneumonia after serving only 31 days.
  • John Tyler becomes 10th President

    served from April 4, 1841-March 4, 1845 as a Whig and then no party. Was Vice President to William Henry Harrison and took office after his death. He opposed and vetoed many Whig party proposals which got him expelled from his party.
  • James K Polk becomes President

    served from March 4, 1845-March 4, 1849 as a Democratic. He served as Speaker of the House from 1835 t o1839 and Governor of Tennessee from 1839 to 1841. He was also a prominent leader of Jacksonian Democracy.
  • Mexican War

    The Mexican War was caused by the unresolved border dispute between Texas and Mexico after the United Sates had annexed Texas.
  • Zachary Taylor named 12th President

    served from March 4, 1849-July 9, 1850 as a Whig. He was known as "Old Rough and Ready" having served in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, and the 2nd Seminole War. Taylor died of gastroenteritis after 16 months into his term.
  • Compromise of 1850

    The Compromise of 1850 was made up of five bills that attempted to resolve disputes over slavery in new territories added to the United States in the wake of the Mexican-American War.
  • Millard Fillmore becomes President

    served from July 9, 1850-March 4, 1853 as a Whig. He assumed presidency after President Zachary Taylor's death. He supported keeping slavery out of lands acquired from the Mexican-American War as a means to appease Southerners. Fillmore supported and signed the Compromise of 1850 and the Fugitive Slave Act.
  • Franklin Pierce becomes President

    served from March 4, 1953-March 4, 1857 as a Democratic. During his presidency he made many divisive choices that earned him a reputation of one of the worst presidents.
  • James Buchanan became President

    served from March 4, 1857-March 4, 1861 as a Democratic. He spent a lot of energy to maintain peace between the North and the South.
  • Abraham Lincoln named 16th President

    served from March 4, 1861- April 15, 1865 as a Republican. Lincoln opposed the expansion of slavery. His victory led to the secessions of southern state slave state, leading to the American Civil War. Lincoln was known to be a very charismatic leader with great oratory skills. He is recognized as one of the greatest US presidents. He was assassinated during his term.
  • Civil War

    The Civil War began in 1861, after decades of simmering tensions between northern and southern states over slavery, states' rights and westward expansion. The Civil War ended in Confederate surrender in 1865.
  • Battle of Antietam

    The Battle of Antietam occurred at Antietam Creek near Sharpsburg, Maryland. It pitted Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia against Union General George McClellan's Army of the Potomac and was the culmination of Lee's attempt to invade the north. It remains the deadliest one-day battle in all of American military history.

    A document declaring freedom for all slaves in the states currently engaged in rebellion against the Union.

    served from March 4, 1 869-March 4, 1877 as a Republican. He was an army general during the American Civil War. Grant supported civil rights for freed slaves and contributed to the revival of the Republican party in the South.
