American History 1789-1824 by Nicole Griffin

  • Period: to

    Washington's Presidency

  • Washington's Inauguration

George was the first president and every single person voted for him.
  • Foreign Affiars

The French Revolution had begun and America owed them for their aid in the American Revolution, but when we were asked to help there were many reason's that we wouldn't. First of all Britian was our biggest trading partner and to go against them would build more tension and mess up trade. Plus, we were still recovering from our war with Britian, could we have a chance at winning again? Congress finally passed a law that would keep us neutral in the war. (Date is the Beginning of the French Rev.)
  • Federal Judiciary Act

It helped Congress with making government decisions by establishing a cabinet in which the members served a term as long as the president whom they were serving under.
  • An Economic Challenge

Hamilton’s plan had the main goal of getting out of debt, it included but taxes on luxury items, having the government pay national and state debt and a national bank. (The exact date was hard to find but it was passed in this year...) The reaction of America was he Whiskey Rebellion where men who made whiskey refused to pay the taxes. Washington and his troops went straight to the source, and scared them, stopping the problem.
  • Washington's Farewell Address

In this speech Washington warned against political parties and staying out of debt. (The date is when the speech was originally published.)
  • The Election of 1796

This was the first time that there was a federalist president and an anti-federalist vice president.
  • Period: to

    Adam's Presidency

  • Alien and Sedition Acts

These were a series of acts that made the process of citizenship longer and basically restricted foreigners in many ways. It also made it illegal to criticize the government. This was very significant because it was unconstitutional and did the opposite of the first amendment. The Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions were the response to this.
  • XYZ Affair

Adam's sent some people to form a treaty with France, who was attacking our ships, and French men that where met with called themselves X, Y and Z. Each of them demanded a bribe to even consider a treaty, which we refused to pay. America was outraged and more people wanted to fight with Britain against France.
  • The Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions

These acts nullified the Alien and Sedition Acts declaring them unconstitutional. They were hoping that other states would do the same but none others did.
  • Election of 1800

There were 35 ties between Jefferson and Burr until finally Jefferson was elected and his opponent became his vice president.
  • Period: to

    Jefferson's Presidency

  • Domestic Policy

Jefferson undid almost everything that Adam's did. He ended the Alien and Sedition Acts and released people who had been imprisoned because of it, cut the military in half and reduced taxes. Also, he was part of the Marbury vs. Madison case and Louisiana Purchase.
  • Marbry vs. Madison

A court case in which Jefferson didn't hire the people that Adam's had tried to before he presidency ended. This case began the precedent of judicial review.
  • Louisiana Purchase

Jefferson offered to purchase New Orleans from Spain and was inreturn offered all the land west of the Mississippi for$15 million which they eagerly accepted.
  • Louis and Clark

Louis and Clark were explores sent to explore and map the new territory. The results of this expedition were good Indian relations, way more land, maps, and beautiful journal entry’s and pictures describing the land.
  • Foreign Policy

The French and the British were threatening US ships to stop each other from receiving supplies. Jefferson didn't think we would've had any problems with other countries so we only had a very small army and couldn't defend ourselves.
  • The Embargo Act

Because we couldn't defend ourselves against impressments, Jefferson passed the Embargo Act which outlawed all foreign trade. The result of this was alot of illegal smuggling and upset people.
  • Period: to

    Madison's Presidency

  • The War of 1812

The fact that Britain supported the Native American resistance, we were under impressments and we wanted Spanish Florida all contributed to the growing tensions that turned into a war. The results were that the Native Americans felt defeated, impressments stopped, the embargo act was repealed and boundaries went back to normal.
  • Hartford Convention

Some New England federalists met and talked about seceding but after the war was over they just looked like traders and Federalists were seen as that for a long time.
