Ferdinand and his wife were shot in Sarajevo. The assasin was Gavrilo Princip, whose motive for the murder was to hopefully end Austria-Hungary South Slav provinces so that they could be combined into Yugoslovia or Greater Serbia.

Austria-Hungarian troops invaded Serbia. This was fought from 1914-1915 when the Macedonian Front was formed. This front would range from Danube to Southern Macedonia and back north again, involving help from almost all combatants from the war.
