Lincoln wanted to end slavery and was elected as president and the south thought they were losing power. -
Dred Scott Case
Dred Scott was an enslaved man who sued his owner for the right to freedom. The highest court ruled that it was illegal to abolish slavery. This led to the north being shocked by this which led to north and south tensions. -

The north was based on industry and because of the increasing population from other societies and cultures, the northern states became more politically powerful. -
Slavery
Slavery was a large factor in the tensions between the north and south that contributed to the civil war. The north believed in freedom from a moral standpoint and the south believed in slavery because the slaves were helped their economy. -
North and South dividing
There were pro-slavery states and states that wanted to get rid of slavery. In the south there was the plantation system that depended on slavery and in the north, it was city life that depended on the industry. These differences led to north and south tensions.
