Zlata sees pictures of the war in Dubrovnic on TV. The war begins.

A gunfire starts in Mojmilo ( a part of Sarajevo ). Zlata states it was a horrible one. "There has been a terrible gunfire in Mojmilo"

Zlata's presedent is captured. Also the main post office burns down. "That's when we learned that the main post office was on fire and that they had kidnapped our president."

Zlata's friend dies when the war starts. "And Nina is dead".

The Zetra Hall ( A place where Zlata went when she was little ) burns down. "Today the Zetra Hall, the Olympic Zetra, went up in flames".

Zlata's uncle, Braco, get shot in the knee and almost loses his leg. Luckely, he gets better. "Mommy's Braco is fine. He's already walking well".

Zlata has a little kitten friend named CiCi that Braco gave to them. The little furball cheers Zlata up through out the book. "Nedo brought us a little visitor today. A kitten".

Zlata's family has no electricity. So that means they won't be able to cook any food. However they find an old wood burning stove in the attic. "Today we brought the wood-burning stove into the kitchen".

"She said that because they want to publish a child's diary and it just might be mine, which means- YOU, MIMMY!"

"The other sad news is that Nedo is leaving". Zlata becomes very sad after this.

"Slowly every body is leaving while I stay behind". Zlata's friends and family are leaving.

"OUR CAT IS NO MORE". Zlata's dear kitten, CiCi, is no longer with her! She went bye-bye giving birth.

"Journalists, television reporters, cameramen keep coming" Reporters keep checking in on whats going on in Sarajevo.

"Our Nedo is getting married today" Zlata's friend Nedo is getting married, only they won't be at the wedding because he's not there!

"Today we heard that letters aren't coming into Sarajevo anymore" One of the most important things to Zlata.

Zlata finally gets out of Sarajevo and with her family, too! They go to Paris for their new homes.
