Creation & dissolution of political parties and sources of power in elections

  • Anti-Federalist Party

    Anti-Federalist Party
    Opposed the ratification of the Constitution because it gave too much power to the Federal Government and less to the States. Wanted to keep the Articles of Confederation. Later became the Republican Party when the Constitution was ratified. Party led by Thomas Jefferson
  • Federalist Party

    Federalist Party
    Supporters of the Constitution led by Alexander Hamilton & John Adams wanted a a strong national government. Opposed the Bill of Rights bceause the Constituiton already gives enough power. Activity and support declined after creation of Republican Party
  • Democratic Party

    Democratic Party
    Created in 1792, strong supporter of States' rights and enforcement of the constitution. Wanted nothing to do with a system like England and didn't agree with the Federalists.
  • Election of 1800

    The only election to ever have the need to add an amendment adding a procedure for electing the President and Vice-President. The election was between Thomas Jefferson and John Adams
  • Dissolution of the Democratic-Republican party

    Dissolution of the Democratic-Republican party
    Replaced by the modern day Democrats and Republicans
  • Election of 1828

    Andrew Jackson went up against John Quincy Adams in a rematch for the Presidential election for the 1824 election where many were led to belive it was Henry Clay's influence that gave John Adams the win that election. Jackson was the first president of the Democrat party
  • Whig Party

    Whig Party
    Formed much later than the Democrats to oppose Andrew Jackson. Favored nationalistic measures like high tariffs, The Bank of United States & internal improvements at national expense, supported by northwesterners and led by Henry Clay.
  • Know Nothing Party

    Know Nothing Party
    AKA the American Party was created after the Whig party. Strongly believed in anti-immigration and anti-roman catholic. Most famous for their "I know nothing" response for when members were asked about their party
  • Dissolution of the Whig Party

    The election of 1852 was the Whig Party's last time they would participate in an election with some support. Most of their support was lost when Henry Clay & Daniel Webster died. Represented by the modern day Republicans

    After and usuccessful run at changing politics, the Know Nothings had dispanded in a vert short time
  • Election of 1860

    The winner Abraham Lincoln had made it clear one of his intentions was to abolish slavery thus his when his opponents who were from the south lost, succeded from the US and began the Civil War
  • Election of 1876

    During the time of Reconstruction between Samuel Tilden and Rutherford B. Hayes (Republican). Although Tilden wins the popular vote the end result is decided by an Electoral Commision and Hayes becomes president under alot of suspicion from the public.
  • Populist Party

    Formed in 1892 in St. Louis for the cause to represent the common man, especially farmers who were up against others with much larger influences like: bankers, railroads, and Robber Barons. The Populist Party AKA the People's party was not very succesful in achieving their goals though their ideas were still around long after they lost support
  • Socialist Party

    Socialists had firm beliefs in the involvement of the government to care for the people in the US that have no voice
  • Progressive Party of 1912

    Created by Theodore Roosevelt after a split in the Republican party with William Howard Taft. Also known as the Bull Moose Party, focused on tariff reform, woman's sufferage and prohobition of child labor
  • Election of 1912

    One of the rare instances in American history where a third party (Bull Moose) defeated one of the two major party candidates and proved that a third party can have an impact in elections. Election of 1912 centered around whether Woman should have the right to vote and dealing with trusts.
  • Election of 1932

    During this election the Democratic Party (Franklin D. Roosevelt) was favored for the creation of the New Deal which would help bring out the US of the Great Depression
  • Election of 2000

    Between George W. Bush and Al Gore. Election came down to a recount in Florida which came in Bush's favor and without winning the popular vote
