  • Liesel loses her brother

    Liesel loses her brother
    Werner Meminger's death gives Liesel nightmares even years after it happened. The whole Meminger family, however, are not real people. They are only representations of Jews struggling in foreign countries. She also steals her first book, "The Grave Digger's Handbook".
  • The Hubermanns

    Liesel moves to a new house in Molching, Germany. Molching, Germany is not on Germany's map, but it gave a sense of what was going on in Germany during World War II. Liesel refused to even get out of the car, but Hans convinced her to do so anyway.

    World War 2 starts
    The invasion of Poland led by Hitler, the leader of Nazi Germany, started World War 2. This is the same day that Liesel starts school again.
  • Book Burnings

    In real history, book burnings were commenced in order to remove any Jewish power or influence. Liesel attended these book burnings and stole one book, "The Shoulder Shrug". The book was not touched by fire, however, it did not exist. The titles made by Markus Zusack show the problems of Hitler's oppression.
  • The Hidden Jew

    The Hidden Jew
    Max Vandenburg, son of Erik Vandenburg (Hans' comrade who saved his life), is forced to hide in Hans' basement from the Nazis. Although Max was a fictional person, there were many Jews throughout World War II who had to hide away from the Nazi regime.
  • The Marching Jews

    The Marching Jews
    Max has to flee since Hans gave the old man a piece of bread. Hans (fictional character) now regrets his decision of giving the piece of bread to the old Jew. The concentration camp in Dachau was filling up with Jews on death marches and experimented on.
  • Air Raids

    Air Raids
    Air raids are when planes bomb certain targets with incendiary bombs. The Allied forces (USA, UK, China, USSR) were the ones doing the bombing. The air raids helped destroy and cripple the Nazi and Japanese Empire. Liesel was the sole survivor of the Himmel Street bombing.
  • World War II Ends

    World War II Ends
    World War II ends with the USA signing a peace treaty with Japan several weeks after they dropped two nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Also, the Russians happened to defeat the Nazis and some say Hitler either killed himself or left Nazi Germany.

    Liesel happens to survive all of World War II and still live a normal life. She now has legacies of children and grandchildren and lives in Sydney, Australia.
