  • Dual Alliance

    Dual Alliance
    In 1879 Germany and Austria-Hungary agreed to form a Dual Alliance to protect each other in the event of case of war. It was also done in an attempt to limit and prevent war.
  • Triple Alliance

    Triple Alliance
    In 1882, Italy decided to join Austro-Hungary and Germany in their Dual Alliance, forming the Triple Alliance. The alliance agreed to defened each other if anyone was attacked by Russia of France, the agreement was renewed in 5 year intervals. (DATE UNKOWN)
  • Italy leaves the Triple Alliance

    Italy leaves the Triple Alliance
    Five months after the Triple Alliance was renewed, Italy reached an agreement with France that they would both become neutral in the event of an attack on the other. Although the alliance was renewed in 1907 and 1912, Italy went into World War I in May 1915, opposing to Germany and Austria-Hungary.

    Frans Fernidad was the heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire. A Serbian-Bosnian group of 7 assains called the Black Hand, planned to kill him while on an insepection of troops. While the first 3 attempts to kill Fernidad were unsuccesful, one managed to injure some passerbys. After the insepection Franz wished to see the victims but on the way his driver took a wrong turn, giving Gavrilo Princip, who was buying a snadwich the time to shoot the heir and his wife.

The allies were made up of Britan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, France, South Africa and Belgium against Germany.

    After only 20 days of fighting, both sides had around 120,000 casulties and losses. Towards the end of April, french reinforcements had arrived, and the German High Command called off the offensive, ending the battle.

    In Australia, there were no effects of destrustion on the country, but it helped shape the identity of our nation. The soldiers were recognised for the bravery and diggers even today have the upmost respect of all Australians. We celebrate them every Anzac and Rememberance Day.
