• THE BATTLE OF THE RIVER MARNE

    This was the battle that made the schlieffen plan fail. It resulted in a stalemate an the perpetual stand still of the First World War.
  • THE RACE TO THE SEA

    The leader of the German army was replaced by Falkenhayn. Falkenhayn tried to outflank the allies. This resulted in the race to the sea. Each side fortified their lines with machine guns and barbed wire. The manoeuvre stretched both sides 700km, from the Swiss alps to the English Chanel.
  • THE EQUIPMENT

    At the start of war soldiers were not effectively equipped to deal with this new type of war. Soft peaked caps were worn, by the end of the war all frontline soldiers wore visored metal helmets. As the war went on many new technologies were invented such as the sub machine gun and armed biplane.
