    German surface raiders and submarines attacked British merchant ships resulting in calamity, and the system was created out of necessity. The convoy system, a group of ships sailing collectively for security, was created to help protect supplies in passenger ships during the war.

    Prager got on the wrong side of a drunken mob that accused him of spying for Imperial Germany. They stripped him totally naked and made him sing patriotic songs. They would take beer bottles and break them in front of him. So he had to step on the broken beer bottles, cut his feet really badly. Prager confessed his love for America and kissed the flag that his persecutors wrapped him in. He was taken to the edge of town to a hanging tree. This was the peak of anti-German sentiment.
