After the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Because of the alliances they had, Russia joined in to help Serbia. Once Germany found that out, they needed to have Austria-Hungary's backs since they were allies. This chain went out for the entire 4 years that the war went on.
