    The Battle of Marne in September 1914 stopped the German advance. It started when Germany invaded Belgium in order to reach France. The British and France met Germany in the Marne River. Germany learned that the Battle of Marne was a stalemate.

So about 1,000 people died when the Lusitania sank, among them 128 people were American citizens.

Another reason it happen is in March 1917 when a revolution was started in Russia. The Russians overthrew the monarchy, which was headed by the Czar. So they set up a provisional government to fight the Germans. So that caused Russia to be an autocracy. So President Wilson declared war on Germany on April 2,1917.
