  • Hollywood, California

    Hollywood, California, becomes the center of movie production in the US. The town merged with the city of Los Angelos in 1910. With quick access to muliple settings, the city out west became popular in movie production.
  • Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand & his wife

    Archduke Frank Ferdinand was driving through the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo when he and his wife were shot. Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Black Hand was responsible. The Black Hand group was an organization promoting Serbian nationalism.
  • War Declared

    Germany declares war on Russia and France. Great Britain declares war on Germany and Hungary. Countries begin choosing sides and was has begun.
  • Theory of Relativity proposed

    Albert Einstein proposes his general theory of relativity. This included Newton's law of universal gravitation. This day Einstein basically defined gravity for humankind.
  • German U-boats sink the "Lusitania"

    A German U-boat off near the southern coast of Ireland sank the British liner Lusitania. This killed 1,198 people, including 128 Americans. The Germans defended themselves by saying the liner carried ammunition.
  • First Transcontinental Telephone Call

    Alexander Graham Bell made the first transcontinental telephone call in 1915. The date coincided with the Panama-Pacific Exposition. The first phone call way in July.
  • Battles of Verdun and the Somme

    The battles of Verdun and the Somme claimed millions of lives. In the first battle of Somme, the British suffered 60,000 casualties. These battles were trench warfare.
  • Woodrow Wilson reeleected as president

    On November 7, 1916 Woodrow Wilson was reelected as US president. Wilson's re-election was the first time that a Democratic Party candidate had won two consecutive Presidential elections since Andrew Jackson won re-election in the 1832 election. Wilson won by nearly 600,000 in the popular vote.
  • Selective Service sets up the draft

    In 1917 the Selective Service sets up the draft. Young men across America were selected to go to war. Parents didn't want their sons to have to witness the warfare.
  • US declares war on Germany

    On January 31 the kaisar announced that U-boats would sink all ships in British waters on sight. This stunned Wilson, but it meant that the United States would have to go to war. Then the Zimmermann note, and the sinking of four unarmed American ships, with a loss of 36 lives came.
  • Russia withdraws

    Russia was unprepared for WWI. By 1917, 1,700,000 Russians had died. Russia withdrew from the war in 1917.
  • Communism established in Russia

    The Bolsheviks establish a Communist regime in Russia. The Bolsheviks came into power during the Russian Revolution of 1917. This paved the way for the Soviet Union.
  • League of Nations proposed

    President Woodrow Wilson proposes the League of Nations. This would be an international organization to address diplomatic crisis. It would provide a forum for nations to discuss and settle grievances without going to war.
  • Sedition Act passed

    In May 1918 Congress passed the Sedition Act. This stated a person could be fined up to 10k and sentenced to 20 years in jail for interfering with the war effort. People could also be sentenced for saying anything disloyal or abusive about the government.
  • WWI Ends

    Germany agreed to sign an armistice, or truce to end the war. This was on the eleventh day in the eleventh month at the eleventh hour in 1918. On June 28, 1919, the Bif Four gathered in the Hall of Mirrors of the Palace of Versailles to sign the Treaty of Versailles
  • Worldwide Epidemic kills 30 million

    A worldwide influenze epidemic kills over 30 million people. This flu epidemic was extremely bas in armies. The flu killed 500,000 Americans before disappearing in 1919.
  • Women gain right to vote

    Congress approves the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote in the US. This took many decades of protest. Women were finally normal in society.
