  • Hobbes published Leviathan

    The most influential philosophical texts produced for the times. It was wrote partly as a response to the fear Hobbes experienced during the political turmoil of the English Civil Wars. During this time England passed the Navigation Act that forbids goods to be imported from the colonies to England. The Leviathan set out new ideas of geometry and war.   • Locke publishes Two Treaties on Government

    The first treatise argues in support of the divine right of Kings. The second one is about a proposed solution to political upheavel. During this time French King Louis XIV sent troops to Ireland. They effected the view on the king and how much right he really has over a kingdom. Then also they influenced political issues.   • Montesquieu published The Spirit of the Laws. The condition of the country determined the political and social structure.

    The Spirit of the Laws is analyzed the veriuos types of political insitutions. This was written during the enlighnmet period.   • Rousseau published The Social Contract, Emile. Attempt to unite the liberty of the individual with the authority of the government. Emile was important for education.

    The Social Contract helped inspire political reforms or revolutions in Europe especially in France. During this time Voltair began a campaign for religious tolerance and legal reform. Rousseau was able to make an impact on ideas like freedom, and methods to sprung a functioning society.
