President's Commission on the Status of Women
Created by President Kennedy and appointed former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt as it's chairperson. Used to investigate the lives of American Women. Found that women workers continued to experience discrimination if the workforce despite increasing numbers. -
Equal Pay Act
Illegal for employers to pay female workers less than male workers for the same job. Did not cover women in agriculture, professional or service industries which was 2/3 of working women. -
Equal Employment Opportunity
Established by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to ensure equality and opportunity by enforcing federal legislation prohibiting discrimination in employment. -
The National Organization for Women
Formed during lunch. Was a women's rights group that had 1,000 members within its first year of existence.The organization tried to influence elected officials to ensure social and economic equality for women. -
Education Amendments Act
Outlawed sexual discrimination in higher education.
"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
