Women's Suffrage in the 1800s and 1900s

  • Troy Female Seminary

    Emma Hart Willard (1787 - 1870) founded the first all-female higher education's school to provide women with the same education as men. After she died, it was later renamed the Emma Willard School, where it still stands today.
  • Ninteenth Amendment Introduced

    Aaron A. Sargent introduces the proposed 19th amendment to the Constitution, discussing womens' suffrage and their right to vote. The wording remains unchanged until 1919.
  • NAWSA Formed

    NAWSA, the National American Women's Suffrage Association, was formed in 1890 with the express purpose of guaranteeing more rights to women in the United States. It merged the NWSA and the AWSA to become this organization. Susan B. Anthony was the primary and leading role in this organization.
  • Ninteenth Amendment Ratified

    The ninteenth amendment to the American Constitution is ratified, guaranteeing all legal American citizens, regardless of sex, cannot be denied the right to vote.
