    In 1848 women split over the 14th and 15th amendments, which granted equal rights and including right to vote to African American men but excluded women. Susan B. Anthony lead a proponent of women suffrage, the right to vote. She said "I would rather cut off my right hand than ask the ballot for the black man and not for women."

    Women pursuedcourt cases to test the law that men were citzens and could vote by asking the question if they were citizens to. They fought for there rights as citizens and tried to use the Constitution on there side but were loosing the battle. So in 1871 Susan B. Anthony and other women decided to test the law and attempt to vote 150 times in 10 states and the District of Columbia.

    Carry Nation and the WCTU feared that alcohol was undermining American morals. Miss Nation walked into saloons, scolding te customers, and using her hatchet to destroy the liquor bottles. The WCTU members would enter saloons, singing, praying, and urging saloon keepers to stop selling alchohol.

    NAWSA formed
    NAWSA stands for National American Women Suffrage Association. The leaders where Lucy Stone, Julia Ward Howe, the author of "The Battle Hym of the Republic." They faced constant opposition. The liquor industry feared that women would vote in support of prohibition, while the textile industry worried that women would vote for restrictions on child labor. Many women feared the changing role of women in society.

    Carrie was Susan B. Anthony's Successor. When Catt returned to the NAWSA she had 5 tactics: 1. Painstaking organization; 2. close ties between local, state, and national workers; 3. establishing a wide base of support; 4. Cautious lobbying; and 5. gracious lady like behavior.
