Women in the U.S. Military/ Womens roles

  • Civil War

    Civil War
    Frances Clayton was 1 of hundreds of women who fought in the Civil War. They would disguise themselves as men to fight for the Union/Confederacy. But, if they didn't want to risk punishment or death then they would just serve as nurses in military hospitals.
  • World War I

    World War I
    Many women were working legally in this war as telephone operators that served overseas with the army. They also worked as army nurses that were stationed near the front lines in Europe. But, women would disguise themselves as men so they could fight in the war even though that was against the laws.
  • World War II

    World War II
    Many women would work for the army but they would have non-combat jobs, like nursing. But, in WW2 over 150,000 women were working as Women's Army Corps. (WAC) This organization helped them get closer to the combat because they were nurses for the soldiers​ who couldn't get back to base or to a close hospital tent.
  • 2 Percent Rule

    2 Percent Rule
    This rule made it so women can be part of the armed forces, but there can only be 2% female in one branch of the army. For example, if there were 100 people in the air force only 2 people could be female.
  • End of the Draft

    End of the Draft
    The end of the draft allowed it so all women could attend to any services for the army they wanted to. Also, since they changed the draft to an all-volunteer​ thing that also helped the women have more jobs to do in the many branches of the army.
  • The Risk Rule

    The Risk Rule is where women can't go to certain​ places in the war... for example, they can't go somewhere where they "risk exposure to direct combat, hostile fire, or capture.
  • Persian Gulf War

    Persian Gulf War
    There were over 40,000 women that got sent to the Golf to fight. There were 15 recorded deaths of just women.
  • A Border Rule

    A Border Rule
    Right before the Border Rule became a thing, the government lifted the Risk Rule. The Border Rule is a rule that allows females to fight in full combat and allows them to fight on the front lines. But, you can only fight for the branches you qualify for.
  • Afghanistan and Iraq

    In this war women and men fought as one just as if they were the exact same. This war started because of the 9/11 attacks. This war was the first war women and men fought together as one not just because they had to. Lastly, this war was really the last time men and women ever thought that they were really different during war other then their gender.
